Patrick J. DeMeo, MD, is a professor and Institute Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at AHN. Dr. DeMeo joined the medical staff of Allegheny General Hospital in 1993. He was appointed chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery at AGH in 2006 and system chair of orthopaedic surgery for West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) in 2009. He also served on the board of directors at WPAHS, which formed the nucleus of AHN when it was launched in 2013. Dr. DeMeo has served as medical director of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club since 2000. Dr. DeMeo’s past roles include medical director of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Regional Final 4 and the City of Pittsburgh’s Great Race, as well as team physician for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He also served as past president of the Dapper Dan Charities and was recognized as the 2002 Pittsburgh Physician of the Year by Vectors. Dr. DeMeo is a member of the Major League Baseball-Team Physician Association, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has served on the Board of Governors for the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and was elected to the American Orthopaedic Association, the country’s preeminent and most exclusive academic orthopaedic professional organization. Dr. DeMeo received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and completed medical school at Wayne State University. He completed his residency training in general surgery at the State University of New York-Downstate Medical Center and in orthopaedic surgery at The Ohio State University. He also completed a fellowship in sports medicine-orthopaedic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He is a Fellow of the American Orthopaedic Association. Dr. DeMeo’s current academic affiliations are with Drexel University College of Medicine and Temple University School of Medicine, where he serves as a professor and associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, respectively.
