Emil J Fernando, MD, is pleased to provide superior breast surgical care to the greater Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania/Eastern Ohio regions. He is an expert in breast cancer and also benign (non-cancerous) breast disease, and he performs the full spectrum of breast surgery procedures and operations. Dr. Fernando received his medical degree from the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (Maywood, IL). He completed his General Surgery residency training at the world-famous Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, OH). He then finished his Breast Surgical Oncology fellowship training at the prestigious Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (Chicago, IL). He is board-certified in Surgery by the American Board of Surgery and he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Dr. Fernando is the Program Director for AHN’s Breast Surgery Fellowship program, and he is honored to train the future generation of breast surgeons. Dr. Fernando brings his world-class training and expertise directly to the Pittsburgh community, so his patients do not need to travel far to receive the best quality of care. Dr. Fernando makes his patients his number one priority, and he promises to give the highest level of compassion and empathy to his patients in addition to his advanced surgical skills. He is adept at nipple-saving mastectomies and also oncoplastic surgery for lumpectomy to give the best cosmetic results possible. Dr. Fernando works with a multi-disciplinary team of radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, and numerous support staff to ensure that all of his patients are receiving comprehensive care and have access to the latest advancements in treatment here at AHN. Dr. Fernando also believes in giving back to the community. He has given numerous local magazine, television, and radio interviews, and has attended community outreach events. In 2021 he participated in Pittsburgh’s American Cancer Society “Real Men Wear Pink Pittsburgh” campaign, and raised $11,000 directly for breast cancer research and treatment! Dr. Fernando conducts research in breast cancer, and he is published in the field. He is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. Outside of work, Dr. Fernando enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters. He is fond of film and theatre, and is an avid music enthusiast. He has a strong interest in history, particularly the American Civil War and the RMS Titanic. He is an amateur chess player, and is also working towards his pilot’s license.
