Dr. David Turkewitz is a pediatrician with expertise in newborn care, care of the hospitalized child, emergency medicine and child abuse and neglect. Dr. Turkewitz is a past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has served on several regional and statewide child advocacy work groups and committees including the Attorney General Advisory Board on Child Abuse. Current advocacy work includes lead physician for Allegheny County Sudden Unexpected Infant Death review, Pennsylvania American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep work group and the PA AAP child abuse and neglect board. Dr. Turkewitz has received many awards including: Bela Schick Award for Excellent in Pediatrics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine 1978; Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Nettie and Charles Ritter Award, Senior Resident Teacher of the year 1981; Pediatrics teaching award, Geisinger Medicine Center; 1985; Family Practice Teaching award, Geisinger Medical Center 1984 and 1986; Emergency Medicine Teaching award, Gesinger Medical Center 1993; American Heart Association award for volunteer service in pediatric advance life support training 1994; Penn State Child Health Advocacy Award 2008; York Daily Record People Who Make a Difference 2012; YMCA volunteer of the year 2013; Central Penn Parents Healthcare Heroes Physician of the Year award 2014; and Pennsylvania American Academy of Pediatrics Pediatrician of the Year award 2014. Dr. Turkewitz’ clinical work primarily focuses on the care of newborns, and he is the physician director of level 1 newborn nursery care for Allegheny Health Network.
