Barbara Duarte Esgalhado, PhD, is a licensed psychologist specializing in the treatment of chronic and terminal illnesses, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, depressive and mood disorders, generalized anxiety, and grief and bereavement. Dr. Esgalhado has a dedicated focus on immigrant and refugee mental health, LGBTQI+ health and wellness, positive aging, and substance use. She provides psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy, meaning-centered psychotherapy, and supports the creative process and artistic development in her patients. Dr. Esgalhado earned her PhD from Columbia University in New York. She completed her predoctoral internship at the Institute for Infants, Children, and Families at the Jewish Board for Family and Children’s Services, and her post-doctoral training at the National Institute of Psychotherapies and New York University’s Department of Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. She furthered her expertise in the psychological assessment and treatment of survivors of human rights violations with Health Right International and in the treatment of chronic and terminal illnesses at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Center in New York. Dr. Esgalhado welcomes patients ages 21 and older.
